Imported and locally-bred sheep will be sold at subsidized rates to Qatari nationals during the period of Ramadan, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Economy and Commerce.

During the month of fasting, the demand for mutton – Qatar’s expensive favourite dish – increases in the local community. The Ministry has sanctioned the lowering of prevailing market rates for sheep procured from local breeders, as well as those from Arab countries such as Jordan and Syria.

Mutton suppliers have been affected by the current uprise in Syria, leading some consumers to prefer those imported from Jordan. Widam, Qatar Meat and Livestock Company, formerly known as Mawashi will import 30,000 sheep of Arab origin, as commissioned by the government.

A report from Qatar News Agency states that sheep from Arab countries will be sold to Qataris four days before Ramadan begins, continuing until the end of the month. It is expected to sell at QR850 and QR950 apiece. The Doha central market will host air-conditioned tents sponsored by Widam. Qatari nationals luxury areas are welcome to lounge at luxury waiting areas in Al Khor, Al Shamal, and Al Mazrooah (Umm Salal). To ensure the proper implementation of this directive, the Ministry will set up vigil at various points throughout the country during the entire duration of the holy month.
